Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Federally Funded Study Finds Women Taking HRT Drugs at Risk

The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) conducted a study consisting of more than 16,000 women who were being given Prempro, an HRT drug. Prempro was given in a attempt to reduce symptoms of menopause and the incidence of osteoporosis.

Side Effects Experienced by Women Taking Prempro

This study was halted abruptly when the Data and Safety Monitoring Board became aware of significant increases in heart problems and breast cancer rates among study participants.  Women who were given Prempro developed alarming side effects, including:

  •  A 26% increase in breast cancer
  •  A 41% increase in strokes
  •  A 22% increase in cardiovascular diseases
  •  A 100% increase in blood clots
